ThePlaylist has posed the question, "is it time for Tom Cruise to win an honorary Academy Award?" and as you might imagine, Collider's Jeff Sneider, Mark Reilly and Perri Nemiroff have some thoughts. Some will say it's far too early in Cruise's career, while others might argue that Cruise hasn't seemed interest in chasing prestige fare, so he might never have another chance. But he has been one of Hollywood's biggest movie stars for three decades, and he has been part of numerous Oscar-nominated films, including Best Picture winner Rain Man.

We ask this question as Cruise's latest action movie, Mission: Impossible -- Fallout, hits theaters. Perhaps it will find itself in the Oscar race this year, filling the blockbuster slot that the Academy had hoped there would be after snubbing The Dark Knight. Collider can exclusively report that James Franco is in negotiations to direct the ESPN movie for Focus Features. The film will be based on the oral history book Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN, written by James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales. Halt and Catch Fire co-creator Christopher C. Rogers is rewriting the script, which was originally penned by Miller. Michael De Luca is producing alongside Jamie Patricof and Julie Yorn.

The news will surely raise some eyebrows, but to Jeff Sneider and Mark Reilly, it makes sense as a natural progression for Franco as a filmmaker. He's expected to approach the tricky material in the same way that The Social Network chronicled the rise of Facebook.
