In this video, we discuss the newly announced Nintendo Switch Lite, the follow-up and more portable version of the Nintendo Switch

Rumored for many months, Nintendo finally unveiled the Nintendo Switch Lite on July 10th, 2019. To very little surprise, the system draws inspiration from its larger counterpart, however, the emphasis on a portable gaming device can definitely be seen.

The Nintendo Switch Lite will be available in three different colors, yellow, gray, and an aquamarine blue. The face of all three units feature white buttons and control inputs, including the d-pad and the analog sticks. I'm somewhat concerned that these buttons may become dirt magnets due to their color, but time will tell.

Gone are the removable Joy Cons, replaced with a pair of permanently mounted units. Additionally, what you would think of it as the left Joy Conhas a more traditional d-pad in lieu of the original’s up-down-left-right buttons. Overall the controls look fairly well thought out and optimized for the new portable emphasis

Perhaps one of the biggest shockers is the fact that the Switch Lite cannot be docked & connected to a TV. Since it cannot go from handheld to TV mode can it really be classified as a Switch? We’ll have to have that philosophical argument at a later point.

Other features have been removed from the system, most notably and the Joy Cons themselves. The IR camera is no longer integrated into the right Joy Con, no big deal to me. However, two features I feel very significant in their absence are the elimination of HD Rumble and gyro controls. Both of these features have been stripped from the system, again in an effort to reduce the size and costs.

I don't know if I'm going to order a Switch Lite at this point. I feel obligated to do a review on it, and I'm really interested to see if there is a way that I can use some of the third-party smaller docs with it. I'm also willing to admit that I could be wrong on the Switch Lite. For me, however, if I was in the market for Switch there is not enough of a difference in value, or savings for that matter, to make me want to purchase a Switch Lite over an original Switch. We will see however in September 2019.
