In this video, we will be unboxing and testing out the Old Skool Double-Shock 4 wireless controller for the PlayStation 4

While I tend to focus on Retro Gaming on the channel, I do also own a Sony PlayStation 4. It is probably the modern generation console which I play the most. One of the reasons why I have been such a fan of the PlayStation line over the Xbox line has been the controller. As such, I have absolutely love the Dualshock 4 controller.

On a recent visit to Live Action Games in Champaign Illinois, Adrian showed me a new wireless controller for the PlayStation 4 from Old Skool. For the price I figured I would give it a shot. During the same visit I also picked up Old Skool switch controller, which you can see our review of in this video here:
https://youtu.be/0phymOoRdaU

The Double-Shock 4 controller actually feels quite nice in the hands. The grips have a bit of texture to them, providing a very positive feeling in the hand. The face buttons all feel great as well, as do the shoulder triggers. The d-pad is probably more akin to what you would find on the Sega Genesis than on the OEM DualShock 4, but it doesn't feel bad. Finally, the analog sticks are extremely smooth, very similar to Old Skool's Switch controller

Unlike Old Skool's controller for the Switch, the pairing process of the Double-Shock 4 could not have been easier. All I had to do was connect the USB cable between the controller and the console, hit the home button, and voila it was paired. I really hope they go back and update their firmware to make the pairing process better on their Switch controller

Battery life has been really good so far, I'd say about 4-to-6 hours has been the typical range. Speaking of the range, I never had any sort of range issues whatsoever with the Double-Shock 4. I did really like the fact the LED indicator is now on the front of the controller, unlike my DualShock 4 which has the LED indicator on the back, where I could never see it. Especially for racing games where this LED tells me the current track conditions, I find this front-facing placements much more useful.

Probably what I like the most about this controller are the L&R triggers. Again, I play a lot of racing games, and these triggers are my throttle and brake. They had a little bit more springiness and resistance than the stock triggers, which allowed me to be smoother on the power and when applying brake pressure.

Why it RoX:
- Available at $40 or less
- Available Wireless or corded
- The triggers feel amazing
- The analog sticks are extremely smooth
- Relocation of LED light bar greatly appreciated
- Textured grips
- Integrated headphone jack
- Charging cable included

What could be improved?
- The D-Pad is not up to the same quality as the rest of the controller
- More color options would be nice
- Not compatible with my current charging stands

Should you buy one?
This is the first time that I can honestly really recommend an Old Skool product. The pairing process went smoothly, the controller performed really well, overall I was really dug how well the Double-Shock 4 worked. Will it replace my OEM DualShock controller? That's a hard one because I really like that controller. However for racing games, this may become my controller of choice because of the LED placement. It's hard to justify when you can get DualShock 4 controllers on-sale for about the same price. The Dualshock simply is superior, but at an everyday regular price, the Old Skool Double-Shock 4 wireless controller is a solid choice if you need another controller for your PlayStation 4.
