Retro Fighters announced in fall of 2017 that they were re-envisioning the N64 controller and took their concept to Kickstarter. Designed to evolve the N64's controller into something that makes better sense with improved button and stick layouts and ergonomics. The result is the Brawler 64, a true next-gen controller for the N64.

The Brawler 64 features a very clean design, from the box to the controller itself. The overall layout is very similar to Retro Fighter's Switch wired controller, and that's a good thing as the ergonomics are great. The analog stick is similar to what is found on Playstation 3/4, XBox and even the Switch Pro Controllers. This is a great thing as it is smooth as butter and has an amazing feel. With the elimination of the trident design the "Z" button has been relocated to the shoulders of the controller. Unlike, say, the Gamecube controller which only has 1 Z button this has double Z buttons, on both the left and right.

Perhaps some of the best improvements can be found in the "C" buttons on the right side of the controller. They are larger than the original's with a great clicky feel. I would have liked to see them replace these with a second analog stick but I get that would have greatly changed how the controller works.

The one one bummer I ran into was the rather short controller cable. It's only about 6-feet long, much too short for my application. I'll be picking up an extension from Castlemaniagames.com for sure.

Testing:
I was eager to get rolling with the Brawler 64 and, as a Star Wars nerd I had to throw in some Rogue Squadron. From the first frame of gameplay I could feel that the Brawler 64 was something special. Small, subtle movements were replicated perfectly in my X-Wing. Button presses were responsive, and honestly the controller felt molded to my hands. Second up was F-Zero X, a fast-paced racing game that definitely requires lightning-fast reactions. Much like Rogue Squadron the Brawler felt amazing, the car went where I pointed it and I was able to countersteer and correct easily when needed. Finally was Goldeneye and, while I am very rusty I LOVED the Z-button placement in this game. It made sniping enemies very easy.

Why it RoX:
- Very affordable
- Amazing build quality
- Compatible with Memory Cards & Rumble Packs
- Great precision out of the analog stick
- Great Ergonomics
- Clicky Buttons
- Makes me want to play my N64 More!

What could be improved?
- Controller cord is too short
- Limited initial supply, will improve eventually

Should you buy one?
Do you own an N64? Then yes, you need one. This is without a doubt the best N64 controller I have ever used. It is comfortable, precise and simply amazing.
