Since my first experiences with 8bitdo controllers I've been a fan. They've nailed the looks, the ergonomics and the performance from the get-go. I was stoked when I heard that 8bitdo controllers were going to be compatible with the Nintendo Switch, but then disappointed when I remembered they didn't have motion controls, rumble or analog sticks. 8bitdo has remedied this with their new SN30 Pro line of controllers, optimized for the Swith but designed to be compatible with other Bluetooth devices.
From the box the SN30Pro instantly hits you in the nostalgia feels. The looks are squarely inspired by that of the Super Nintendo (or Super Famicom in the case of the SF30 Pro). Somehow they managed to squeeze in not only dual analog sticks, home and capture buttons but also an L2 and R2. And they don't feel stuck on our out of place, the feel amazing! These features don't feel just stuck on, they feel like they were always meant to be here.
Who cares about the ergonomics and styling if the gameplay suffers, am I right? For my testing I decided to see how it paired and worked with three different devices: An NES Classic with Nincade wireless adapter, an SNES Classic using 8bitdo's own dongle and my Nintendo Switch.
From the word go my Nincade-equipped NES Classic worked flawlessly with the SN30 Pro. Sure, there were extra buttons here I wouldn't need but man, this thing was locked in from the word go. Rock solid and locked in would be how I would describe its performance. Yes, the NES Classic has its own lag and latency issues but if the SN30 Pro was impacting these I couldn't tell.
Next up was the SNES Classic and once again it worked perfectly. I was able to pair with the dongle easily and was playing games in no-time flat. Things weren't quite as locked in here as on Super Street Fighter 2 I just could not pull off the dragon uppercut at all with Ryu, rather frustrating honestly. For action platformers, however, it worked just fine.
On the Nintendo Switch I needed to know whether it supported motion controls and I was thrilled to discover that indeed it does! The analog sticks felt great regardless of the game I was playing. The rumble is a little off, its definitely not HD rumble but it IS there.

Should you buy one?
The SN30 Pro controller won't replace the Nintendo Pro controller, but it is a darn good player 2 or travel controller to have at the ready. Having rumble and motion controls is amazing, even if the rumble is a bit anemic. Overall another great 8bitdo offering.
