Hello, Durag Nation. Seems like there's no day without a Venom debate, and today is no different. The Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 community is at it again, but this time, the buzz isn't about who the primary Venom will be — it's clearly Norman — but rather, the possibility of Venom being a playable character. Fans have noticed something they think could be Insomniac's way of confirming this, and I'm going to break it all down for you, along with another huge Spider-Man 2 revelation that's about to drop.
Now, this isn't the first time the idea of Venom being playable has been thrown around. One leak, which hasn't exactly aged well, hinted at the possibility of playable sections featuring Eddie Brock, the game’s main Venom. However, Insomniac put that rumor to bed during the Summer Game Fest. That said, I've got a video discussing Eddie's likely role in the game.
Then there was another leak, supposedly from an Insomniac email, about a 3rd playable character that sounded suspiciously like Yuri Watanabe’s Wraith or Agent Venom. Most recently, fans are buzzing about a photo mode sticker pack for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 that features logos of all the playable Spider-Men — Peter, Miles, Symbiote Peter — as well as a new logo for Venom, leading some to conclude this implies Venom will be playable.
In my opinion, this might be reading too much into it, but considering Insomniac's hints at turning Peter into Venom, we could possibly see some story set-piece missions with Venomized Peter in control, maybe even a boss battle where Miles attempts to rescue his friend.
Big news doesn't stop there for Spider-Man 2. As I mentioned in my previous video, my hunch about Comic-Con was spot on, and Spider-Man 2 will indeed be highlighted during one of Marvel’s gaming panels. But there's more.
Tony Todd, the voice of Venom in Spider-Man 2, let slip in a now-deleted tweet that Insomniac was originally targeting a September release for the game, which aligns with the actual October release, and that the devs postponed the release date announcement to be 100% sure. The tweet also hinted at a marketing push slated for August.
According to the San Diego Comic-Con schedule, the Spider-Man 2 showcase is set for Saturday, July 22nd. Perfect timing, as Game Informer is expected to feature Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. They typically select an upcoming game for their magazine cover and dedicate a month to exclusive coverage including trailers, screenshots, and developer interviews.
Given their July pick was Armored Core, and they typically reveal the cover of their next game around the 20th of the month, the timing could align perfectly with Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 showcase at Comic-Con and corroborate with what Tony Todd accidentally revealed.
We could also finally get official confirmation about Gwen Stacy's inclusion, rumored to be the 3rd playable character in Spider-Man 2.
