Jade Cocoon 2 is a game I had as a kid, and it's one I put a lot of time into, but I never quite finished it. It's a great monster raising game, especially in terms of aesthetic and feel. Sometimes the wormhole forest feels a little samey, to be sure, but the slowly emergent music and increasing necessity of countering attrition with longer areas, makes it a constant and interesting challenge.

Except for the whole "only sides of the formation you've used get EXP" thing, which kinda makes you need to do everyday battles in the same old way every time, but it does make your party quite the well-oiled machine when it's all working as you want it.

Ultimately, if you want a game whose strategy is more about making a solid party and exploring/lasting through long combat areas than necessarily complicated battles (there are certainly some tough fights too, though!) then this game may be a fun project for you.
