※本來、和刻は 不定時法のため、季節・地域によって 時間が 伸縮・移動する。
(夏は 晝が長く、冬は 夜が長くなる。そして 當然ながら、東の地方ほど 夜明けも日暮れも早く來る。)
夜明け/日暮れ を基準に、晝/夜を 6等分。一刻(いっとき)は 約2時間。
それぞれに 十二支が割り當てられ、深夜0時頃から 子 丑 寅 卯 辰 巳 午 未 申 酉 戌 亥 で 24時間分。
一刻を さらに4等分して 一ツ時、二ツ時、三ツ時、四ツ時。または 3等分して 上刻、中刻、下刻 となる。
(半刻(はんとき)→約1時間。四半刻(しはんとき)→約30分。)
これらは ざっくりとした範圍を示すため (例: 丑 三ツ時 →深夜2時〜2時30分ぐらゐ)、ピンポイントで時刻を指定したい時は 明け六ッ 晝八ッ のやうな呼び方もする。
九から始まって 八 七 六 五 四と下がり また 九に戾る。(三 二 一 は無い。)
また、午の刻は 11時〜13時頃の範圍だが、午の正刻と呼ぶと そのちょうど眞ん中 晝の12時頃を指す。(正午=午の正刻)
日の出と夜明け 日沒と日暮れは 嚴密には違ひ、夜明けは日の出より約30分早く 日暮れは日沒より約30分遲い。
夜明けは 日の出の前だが 明るくなり始め、日暮れは 日沒後だが 完全には暗くなる前。
時の鐘の 最初の3囘は 注意を引くための 捨て鐘。例へば、晝九ッ の場合は、3囘鳴らした後に 9囘鳴らし、計12囘 鳴らす。

Strictly speaking, time changes with seasons and regions. Because on the basis of dawn and nightfall.
Originally an irregular time method.
Time counting starts at 9 and goes down to 8 7 6 5 4. (No 3 and 2 and 1.)
Ring the temple bell 3 times first, to get attention. (Not counting.)
And then, ring the temple bell for the number of hours.
(e.g. Hiru-Kokonotsu (Noon 9) → 3 times and 9 times, 12 times in total.)
