A highway made out of wooden planks instead of pavement? There once was such an unlikely plank road that was built in 1915 to connect Yuma, Arizona to San Diego, California. The plank road was the idea of a businessman in San Diego named Fletcher. Cars were still relatively new on the scene and there weren't a whole lot of paved roads like there are today. Getting across the vast desert was a problem, so a plank road was built to accommodate cars on their journey westward to the Pacific Ocean in San Diego or eastward to Yuma and the Colorado River.

Remnants of the old plank road can still be found in the desert. In this video, I examine a preserved section that's in the Imperial sand dunes in southern California. It definitely is a relic from over 100 years ago.

At the end of the video, don't miss the sneak-peek scenes from an abandoned mine exploration or two that will be featured in upcoming videos!
