The Frightening Fractures in the Abandoned Franklin Mine
0What's worse than exploring an abandoned mine? Exploring an abandoned mine that is full of cracked and fractured rocks! Clinging precariously to the side of a steep, rugged mountain in the desert, the Franklin Mine is a former talc and soapstone mine that was worked throughout the early and mid 1900s. It’s definitely off the beaten path due to how remote it is, so it’s worth the effort to see it in person. During the two-mile hike up and over the mountain to the mine, I had a fascinating encounter with a butterfly. While underground in the Franklin Mine, I found a large chamber that was outfitted with rare, square-set timbering. The lengthy main haulage tunnel was dug through extremely fractured rock on all sides which made for a dangerous exploration. And all along the way to and from the mine, the high-altitude views looking down on the desert valleys far below were breathtaking!
