Jazz Jackrabbit 2: How does it run on 1998 PCs? — Intel Pentium II 400 Mhz & Matrox Millennium II
REAL HARDWARE CAPTURE WITH A 4:3 ASPECT RATIO.
How did Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (Epic Megagames & Orange Games, May 7th 1998) run on top-of-the-line CPUs in mid-1998? This video will attempt to answer that question.
Evidently, not even a state-of-the-art (circa early May 1998) Pentium II at 400 Mhz can play the game "flawlessly" (if we assume 60hz minimum frame-rate) with maxed out settings. Even the Orange Games logo when starting the game isn't 100% smoothly rendered!
Outside of resolution options that employ 16-bits/pixel color depth, Jazz Jackrabbit 2 runs without any severe hiccups on this 400 Mhz Pentium II processor. Enabling the Hardware Mode option can help speed things up further, although it does come with some compromises; transparencies and ambient lighting effects are completely disabled and the water level will suffer from a BIG drop in performance whenever the wavy water effect is visible on screen. As such, the game is best experienced in software rendering mode even if it isn't always the most performant in all situations.
This footage and audio was captured from the following computer:
- Dell Dimension XPS R400 case and motherboard (manufactured on April 30th 1998)
- Intel 440BX motherboard (chipset manufactured week 7 1998)
- Intel Pentium II 400 Mhz processor (S-Spec SL2S7, manufactured week 14 1998)
- Matrox Millennium II AGP (8MB) video card
- Creative Labs 3D Blaster Voodoo 2 (CT6670) (12MB) 3D accelerator card
- Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! (CT4620) sound card
- Turtle Beach Montego (Aureal Vortex) (A3D) sound card
- 192MBs of PC100 SDR SDRAM
- Windows 98 (FE) operating system
Capturing of the footage was done by connecting the video output from the captured system to a Datapath VisionRGB-E1s capture card and the application VirtualDub2 was used as the primary capturing software. The footage was subsequently resized (upscaled) from 640x480 to 3200x2400 using VirtualDub2.
