Joel from The Last of Us. Mighty Thin Ice On-Camera Scene. Performed by Sam John

This channel had its small beginnings with my love for video game performance capture and voice acting. Truthfully, I wasn’t too comfortable with myself on-camera at the start of this unbelievable journey. Over the past months, I have learned to love myself and bring my complete self to the character work I am doing. In tune with this recent shift, I decided to do this scene that I hold so close to my heart and take it a step beyond inputting my audio. I decided that this is the time to bring everything that I’ve learned over the past year of acting classes and tool gathering into the mix.
This scene is one I’ve been working on with my phenomenal Professor, Isaiah Johnson. In my mind when I came into class, I had a specific way I wanted to do the scene, and in all truth, the feeling of lack of trust hits home for me. It wasn’t till I worked with Professor Johnson that I realized that I wasn’t allowing myself to be a part of the scene because it scared me. Acknowledging that fear and breaking down the quality of movements of Joel enabled me to see the words for what they were. It empowered me to use the parts of me that make my rendition of Joel particularly unique, creating a brand new performance.
I am constantly amazed and humbled by the gifts that my God has blessed me with over the past year. My life as a performer and a person has changed so drastically. This piece feels like the perfect way to bookend this chapter as I venture into what life holds next. I am so proud of this piece and am so excited to present you all with my take on the Mighty Thin Ice Scene from The Last of Us.
