I can think of no better way to close out Series 7 than with a double feature. It was such a challenge to work on and opened me up to the idea of multiple approaches to what motivates a character and how critical that can be to my character work and auditions. I immediately connected to this monologue from the moment I first decided to work on it a few years ago. Fast forward a couple of years of training and artistic development later, I realized that I saw the monologue and the character differently.
With that in mind, I worked on an approach to the character, centered around a personal connection, a longing for love, and ultimately rooted in a state of dramatic realism. I was very proud of what I was able to put forward but, one of my Professors, Andrew Ramcharan, advised me to try it with a comedic lens. I was initially concerned because I had a knack for losing the sense of realism when I perform comedic pieces. With the full awareness of this issue and a quiet determination to get it right this time, I approached the performance. After a lot of time and character work, I put together a performance I was very proud of.
This piece reminded me of the invaluable nature of the training I have received from the SCAD Performing Arts department and my personal growth as an artist. I can think of no better way to conclude Series 7, and I hope you all enjoy this piece.
