For this new concept series, I wanted to enter a character and the actor that portrays them into a situation where they have to co-exist. I wanted to find duos that wouldn’t seem to match up in real life, and there was no better starting point than Joel Miller from The Last of Us portrayed by Troy Baker. This idea had its own set of problems particularly when it came to scripting and establishing the two men as separate entities. It was a tremendous amount of fun putting together the script as I counted on few references I could employ from the game and Troy Baker’s personality as seen in interviews.

The recording process taught me a lot about straddling the line between who these two men are and the vocal tone and quirks they possess. The most challenging part was having to go beyond the accent because as I was putting together the project, I quickly realized that there has to be more than just the difference in accent. More than anything else, the scene needed to be conversational and grounded in believability. I was very proud of how the final piece turned out because it also furthered my creative license to a new realm of possibilities. I wanted to try this new concept, and as it turns out, the scripting, recording, and editing process were challenging but also so rewarding.

Those of you who have been long time followers of the channel also know how integral Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us games are to who I am as an artist and, more importantly, a person. I am so humbled and honored to present you all with the first entry into the brand new Actor Character Encounter Series: Joel Miller and Troy Baker strategize.
