Jurgen Klopp almost managed THIS rival club!
We are fast approaching Jurgen Klopp’s eighth year in charge of Liverpool. Today, there is absolutely no doubt that we are witnessing an elite football manager at the peak of his powers.
Well tenured at Mainz as a player, Klopp retired in 2001 to coach the burgeoning second tier German outfit. By the time he resigned in 2008, he had gotten Mainz promoted for the first time in their history.
Approached by Borussia Dortmund, Klopp would go from strength to strength, destroying Bayern Munich’s monopoly over the Bundesliga by winning two consecutive league titles, a domestic double and even went close to delivering the club’s second Champions League glory.
Champions League glory is what Klopp finally returned to Liverpool in 2019, a sixth championship in Europe before ending a three-decade long league title drought on Merseyside.
But it could’ve gone so differently.
Klopp has either turned down or been turned down for management roles at both Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich in Germany, as well as Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in the Premier League.
This week, we will delve into all five of these alternate scenarios.
