Kaijuu Monogatari (NES) – [Part 01] - - The Hero of the Fire Shell
This next project is a video game that had its origins on the famicom but eventually spawned a popular franchise on the super famicom and Gameboy. Juvie Quest which I also have on my channel was one of the early games on the nes as is this one.
Kaijuu Monogatari is a role-playing video game developed by Birthday and published by Namco for the Famicom, in November 1988 in Japan. The title itself is also translated to “Shell Beast Story”. This game is the spiritual successor to the more popular series, “Super Shell Monster story” which I do plan on uploading to my channel in due time.
The story takes place in the world of “Shell Dorado” and stars four characters, the fire shell Human boy named Hero, and 3 other characters that will join you on your quest with each possessing 4 different elements, as they take on the Demon Fat Badger. This is also Namco's first published traditional console RPG. It follows a very established formula that is inspired by the likes of Dragon quest and the game’s art style and aesthetic look very similar to Akira Toriyama design, down to the cover artwork.
Now here is where things get interesting. The game introduces an idea in jrpgs that was quite an innovative concept at the time. The 4 heroes are scattered across the land, and they must all unite with each other, before going on a grand adventure together. You can split the viewpoint between each of the characters and play from there perspective in the story any time you choose, but its to your advantage to equally prepare and level them up so by the time they unite, that you have a strong party that can tackle the higher difficulty and challenges in the 2nd half of the game. In that respect, the game is very non-linear, much like an MMORPG, where you can explore areas around the world, even venture into your parties’ starting zones at different points across the map. For example, let’s say I wanted to start with Character A, and then switch to Character B and provided I have the items and skills, I can meet Character A at any point I want to, or even venture across the lands to meet Character C. As I said a very pioneering mechanic in design which I can’t wait to utilize in the Super famicom games (more on that later)
This is going to be the start of a very underrated series that is even often compared to the likes of some of the greats of the 16-bit era in Japan so I am really excited to begin this journey and although the first game might be a bit rough around the edges and a bit more simplistic in terms of design and writing due its limited hardware on the NES, I do believe in playing them all and starting from its early rooted title but rest assured I will get to the other games eventually. Enjoy!
