The hero of Altania has braved many challenges on his quest but as they say all things come to an end. Time to find out what really happened to the world and where the hell is Gladrif? Who is the instigator behind unleashing the demons upon the world. All these answers will be told as we venture into the final resting place in the central cave, located behind a massive lava filled volcano deep in the heart of LEN.

With the Gold idol in hand, you have access to the strongest AOE spell in the game, though it consumes a lot of MP. This spell is best used against very strong enemies that surround you which you will need for the final dungeon. Personally, I did not use it as much because the monsters are so strong that you need healing at the ready at all times so I had to rely mostly on the White Idol to stay alive.

The last dungeon is unlike any of the others before it, the enemies here are amongst the strongest monsters you have faced yet. You will need as many restocks of potions as you can get especially for the final boss, and it’s required that you be at least level 50 before entering. If you have not obtained lvl 50 by then, the overworld encounters provide you a lot of exp, like 450 each for some of the stronger enemies. You should be well equipped with the sword of Kalin and strong enough to face all the enemies in the overworld by now. So, use this time to gain a few more levels and then prepare for the final trek into the dark depths of the cave and onwards to your ultimate foe.

Well, there ya have it. The Culprit was Gladrift all along. The Dark mage used his power to ensnare the people of Altania and the lands surrounding the kingdom and unleash demons upon the world. I guess that was pretty obvious but in the 1980’s it might have been a bit more of an unexpected plot twist.

The last boss was not that difficult but his mobs that surround him can be quite a nuisance. Even if you attempt to kill them, they will just be re-summoned again. So your best option here is to utitlize the black Idol to slow the movement speed of his minions, well using the sword of kalin to strike him down one at a time well keeping your HP healthy.

Final Thoughts: The game was interesting for sure and definitely a step above Ys I in terms of its bump mechanics. There was enough variety in spells and skills that added a degree of challenge and dynamics to the combat system which I enjoyed. The one shortcoming I think is the game could have been heavily expanded with a lot of different variety of upgrades and further use of equipment. I felt the game was a bit short in that end and the exploration surrounding the towns and shopping was also somewhat middling. I think all in all had all these designs choices been used for a fully fledged sized rpg like Dragon quest II or Final Fantasy, it would have provided a more complete and thorough experience. I get the sense that the developers sort of ran out of room or there schedule was cut short because of either memory or time constraints and opted to streamline the 2nd half by including a multi-tier dungeon system as opposed to a fully fledged out world like in the first half. Anyways it certainly has historical value as it’s the first game the early square staff developed, during the company’s infancy, when they dabbled into the world of rpgs, predating even Final Fantasy.
