Keith Levene, a pioneering British guitarist who helped form The Clash and Public Image Ltd., passed away on Friday from liver cancer. He was 65.

In a Saturday tweet, author Adam Hammond announced the punk pioneer's death.

“It is with great sadness I report that my close friend and legendary Public Image Limited guitarist Keith Levene passed away on Friday 11th November,” Adam Hammond wrote.

“There is no doubt that Keith was one of the most innovative, audacious and influential guitarists of all time.”

Keith Levene, who was born in London in 1957, began working as a roadie for Yes while still a young adult in the early 1970s. At the age of 18, he co-founded The Clash with guitarist Mick Jones and bassist Paul Simonon, and the group quickly rose to stardom. Joe Strummer, the frontman for the 101ers at the time, was persuaded to join the band by Keith Levene and manager Bernard Rhodes.
