5Kena: Bridge of Spirits is an action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective.
Players control Kena, a young spirit guide with magical abilities. In combat, players use the Kena staff for light, heavy, and charged attacks.
The upgrade turns the staff into bows, which can be used to attack enemies, act as hooks, or hit crystals to solve puzzles. While defending against enemies, the player can activate Kena's pulse ability, which acts as a shield and has a health gauge that depletes when attacked, serves to provide hints and activate objects, and upgrades allow the player to dash forward, which can be used to bypass barriers to the Realm. Spirits, dodge attacks and electrocute enemies, and incarnate spirit enemies. Activates the pulse ability before the attack stuns the enemy. Players gain the ability to use Spirit Bombs, which can be used to float glittering stones for platforming or as an attack on enemies.
Players are tasked with gathering small spirit companions known as Rot. They can be directed to complete tasks, such as moving objects, taking certain forms, or distracting enemies. Players must damage enemies to muster enough courage before Rot can join the battle. Directing Rot to complete tasks during combat will exhaust courage, which can be regained by continuously attacking enemies and gathering dropped courage. Rot can insert the player's arrows or bombs to inflict more powerful attacks. Rots can be customized with different hats, which are found by completing tasks or opening chests, when found, they are available in the Rot Hat Cart, where they can be purchased using Gems earned and found throughout the game world. Players earn karma by completing tasks and finding collectibles, which are used to unlock upgrades and abilities such as stronger attacks or stronger shields. All over the world, players can find spirit letters, which are used to unlock areas within villages and free the spirits within. Players can find locations to meditate; doing so will increase their overall health bar.
