I'm continuing my Kerbal Space Program Beta career game, finishing up a few contracts that I've had for a while.

I start off by looking at the contracts that I currently have. Two stand out, one being to test a mk25 parachute above 23 km, and another to do a near by visual survey. I then look at the currently offered contracts. There is another contract for temperature reading on the Mun (we already have one like it), which we take. Additionally there is another nearby visual survey contract, which we also take.

We go to the Space Plane Hanger, and slightly modify our existing small aircraft, adding some thermometers and an extra parachute. We put Jeb aboard as pilot, and we head out to complete the visual surveys.

We take off without much trouble, and plan out our route to the various points. One of the points is a surface reading in the ocean, so that is planned to be our last point. We fly to the various point, taking pressure readings at the correct altitudes. This takes some time, but isn't really that difficult except that the aircraft looses maneuverability at high altitudes.

We eventually collect all the data except for the last surface reading. We fly low and slow until we are told we are over the last point, at which point we cut the engines and activate the parachutes. With the four parachutes, we hit the water under 6 m/s safely. We take the last reading and recover the plane.

We then plan to do the mk25 parachute test. At first I though of using a rocket, but that would be a bit risky as we might have been going too fast for the test at the required altitude. Instead, we decided to build an aircraft capable of reaching 25 km for the test.

We go to the R&D center to pick up some tech that will make this plane easier to build and come back with High Altitude Flight, which contains the TurboJet engines and an inline cockpit as well as some other parts.

Back in the space plane hanger, we build a small aircraft with two turbojet engines, several air intakes, and a large wing area for good lift. There is one mk 25 parachute and 6 of the normal radial parachutes in case we can't land the plane. Jeb and Bill decide to test with new plane out.

Liftoff goes ok, but the plane is a bit nose heavy. We get going up, and throttle up all the way so we can reach the test altitude. We get up to speed at about 11 km, however by 15 km, we are over the top speed of the test. As we get up to the test altitude, one engine flames out, causing us to spin. Even though we are spinning, the thin air doesn't slow us enough to do the test until we've fallen below minimum altitude. We regain control on the way down, and restart the engine to attempt the test again.

This time the test succeeds. We cut the parachute as we start to descent, and we turn back towards KSC. We never get there though, because as we attempt to turn we lose control and begin to go sideways, wing first. As we drop to 5 km, we pop the parachutes. The slow the craft and bring it into a controlled descent. The plane is tilted nose high as the back parachute was cut, so we use the engines to help slow as a bit. We touchdown without breaking anything, and cut the engines and apply the breaks and recover the plane.

That completes three contracts for the episode, bringing us to over 900,000 funds, and leaving us with 604 science!
