We're back attempting to land on Minmus and do visual surveys there in this episode of Kerbal Space Program.

We start of picking up a few contracts at mission control, including a visual survey near KSC, and a contract to plant a flag on Minmus (luckily we have kerbals orbiting there!).

We then rejoin Bill, Bob and Jeb in low orbit around Minmus. The are about 1/2 an orbit from their landing site, so we do a small burn with our RCS to get our periapsis over the landing site. We then time warp until about 5 minutes before the landing site. Once there, we notice that the rotation of Minmus has moved the landing site out from under our orbit, so we do another small burn to line it up better.

Once over the landing site, we burn to stop our horizontal velocity, so that we start falling straight down.We are a bit outside of the landing zone, we we angle slightly so that we drift over to the landing site as we fall to the surface. We get within the area, and stop our horizontal motion. We then start heading straight down from about 4 km up.

At about a km up, we transfer the last of the fuel from the spare tank into our main tank, and then attempt to drop it away. However, for some reason, it doesn't drop away. We try increasing thrust and slightly wobbling, but nothing detaches the tank. We decide to continue with the landing, but to be extra careful to land softly.

At about 400 meters up, our lights brighten the surface, and we slow to about 5 m/s. We continue down slowly, and finally land at under 1 m/s. The ship wobbles a bit, but rests on top of the detached tank.

We gather the all the science we can including the readings for the contract, and we plant a flag on the surface. We then sent Bob over to the north, to collect an EVA report at a second site that turns about to be about 2 km away, after starting off in slightly the wrong direction.

Once Bob gets back, there are two more site to visit, further to the north. They are further away, so we decide to move the ship. We lift off and hear for the further site. We attempt to come to a stop over, but apparently we drift off and land over 1 km from it, again landing softly on the detached fuel tank. Because we are somewhat far away, we decide to move again.

This time when lifting off, the detached tank finally comes free! This turns out to be really good, as once we do get to the landing site, it is on a decent slope. we come done slowly, and cut the engines when the landing legs touch, relying on RCS to keep us from tipping over. It barely works, but it does work, and we come to a rest on our landing legs.

We collect the data we need and send Bob out on EVA to the last site, to collect the data there. With all the data collected, we are ready to return home, but we still have more than 3/4 of our fuel left. We'll head home next time, but first we'll check if there is anything more we can do at Minmus first!
