Kerbal Space Program - How to build and fly an SSTO Space Plane
This is a step-by-step guide on how to build your first single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) space plane in Kerbal Space Program (KSP), and how to fly it to the Kerbin orbit.
This is my mod list for the mods that were shown in this video. I do use many more mods actually, but not all of them are required for assembling this SSTO.
That is why I will highlight the ones you really need
Essential parts mods:
- SpacePlane+ (http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/80796) - from this one I used cockpit and docking port. Will become stock in 0.25
- B9 Aerospace(http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/92630) - a must-have parts pack, as 90% of other components for this plane came from this pack (intakes, fuselage, wheels, tail, cargo bay, etc..)
- Procedural Wings (http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/29862) - wings that you can adjust as you like. Essential
Non-essential, yet useful mods.
- Vanguard Tech (http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/25305) - ejection seats and parachutes. Not necessary, but fun to use if things go south
- Editor Extensions (http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/38768) - for easier manipulation with aircraft assembly
- Part Catalog (http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/35018-0-24-2-PartCatalog-3-0-RC7-%282014-08-18%29) - the tabs you see me use to filter parts by mod. Not needed, yet highly useful
- TAC Life Support (http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/40667) - for food, water and oxygen for your kerbals. Not needed for plane, yet cool and more realistic gameplay mechanic
- RCS Build Aid (http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/35996) - handy tool for balancing the RCS thrusters
- Kerbal Engineer (http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/18230) - essential for VAB construction (see how much deltaV your plane has), and also useful in-flight showing most important parameters (Apoapsis, Periapsis, and many more)
- Ferram Aerospace Research (http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/20451) - essential mod for spaceplanes. Total rework of the stock drag model
- Chatterer (http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/92324-0-24-2-Chatterer-v-0-6-0-Aug-29-2014) - non essential, yet one of my favorite mods, due to atmosphere it creates. The radio chatter you hear in the background
- Alternate Resource Panel (http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/60227) - non essential - yet cool looking alternate resource panel. Much nicer than stock
- Deadly Reentry (http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/54954) - a difficulty mod. It makes your craft and components burn out on re-entry if you are not careful. Use with caution
- Precise Node (http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/47863) - handy tool for map view calculation of manuever nodes. Not needed, yet useful
- Kerbal Alarm Clock (http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/24786) - handy tool that alerts you when your manuever node is up. Also not needed
It is also possible to build valid spaceplanes with stock parts, but i prefer to build planes that visually look good to me.
