Kessen (2000) - Playstation 2 - Review
32THEY SHALL FEAR MY TONBOGIRI!
Today, I take a look at Kessen, a strategy game that was a launch title for the Playstation 2.
The game was played on original PS2 hardware via HD RetroVision component cables and an OSSC.
Some things to take note of:
1. The game presents the Japanese names the wrong way around. Traditionally, they are "Family name, Given name" but Kessen presents them as "Given name, Family name." I'm too used to the traditional method and that is how I presented them in the review.
2. While the graphics look nice for a launch title, the environments in the battles are empty and the overall presentation is plagued by PS1-like dithering.
3. You can zoom in on the battles but all you see are just a bunch of soldiers walking around poking each other. Not very interesting.
4. While the main cast is voiced well, unimportant generals aren't. They mostly run around repeating "SUCH IS TRULY CHILD'S PLAY!" or "THEY SHALL RUE THE DAY THEY STOOD IN MY WAY!"
Trivia:
The narrator is voiced by David Kaye who went on to voice Clank in every Ratchet and Clank thing made. He also voiced the narrator and Xiahou Dun in Dynasty Warriors 3, an uncredited role.
Paul Dobson voiced Tokugawa Ieyasu and later on voiced Gabriel Angelos in the Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War series.
