Kid Chameleon High Scores - The Forbidden Tombs (7,350 Points) [WR]
The first thing that should jump out at you from the title is how low the score is that I got. 7,350 points is so anomalously low, it's about 15,000 points less than the second lowest score in the game! (This does not include levels without flags). This is attributed due to two reasons:
First, there isn't even a speed bonus programmed into this level. Well, technically it is 0 seconds, but the point is that it will never be possible to get. A possible explanation for this could be that this was originally an elsewhere level in early development, as all elsewheres have a speed bonus assigned as 0 seconds. When a flag was placed into the level, the programmers erroneously forgot to add a proper speed bonus value. So this automatically subtracts 10,000 points from any score possible, an unfortunate consequence of the error.
Second, this level forces you to collect a prize, in this case, a Red Stealth helmet, in order to beat the level. Now, in your average level, this wouldn't really be an issue, as you could collect collect a couple of clocks to make up for this, but there is not even a single clock in the level! So there goes another 5,000 points.
Even though this score is far lower than average, we can still maximize it by getting a good time when reaching the flag. In this case, the best I was able to do was 2:35, the only critical time to be met.
First, you want to go ahead and save about 1-2 seconds by pulling off helmet reset glitch with the Berzerker helmet at the beginning of the level. After re-entering as Kid-palette Berzerker, climb up the ruins until you reach a duo of Spinning Twins. Use invulnerability to charge through them, and the columns of steel blocks they were guarding.
When inside the tombs, you want to progress all the way to the right before invulnerability runs out. There's only one place that'll really kind of obstruct you, and that is the point where you have to jump into some rock blocks. This is a pretty precise jump, and you want to get through here without being stopped. Stopping can be avoided by jumping at the last possible moment before the steel block, and repeatedly tapping the jump button afterwards to jump immediately after. Now, go all the way to the right and charge the column of steel blocks.
After charging those blocks, you're going to want to backtrack to get a Red Stealth helmet, which is required for beating the level. By this point, your invulnerability will have ended, so use the second round here, to go back through the Spinning Twins you just went through. Now, the prize block containing the Red Stealth helmet in question is slightly difficult to reach as Berzerker. Look at the foreground tiles on the floor of the level. You will notice the bricks are approximately laid out in a 2x1, 1x1, 2x1 pattern. When Berzerker crosses the second 1x1 brick from the left of the row you're running on, that is when I jump. This should land me on precisely the right block below, so that I can jump into the upper left corner and trigger the prize block to appear. Keep hitting the prize block until you've successfully transformed into Red Stealth.
As Red Stealth, progress all the way back to the right margin of the level, and down-thrust the last column of rock blocks (you can do the first column, but the alignment there is far harder, and only saves an insignificant amount of time). Upon falling through the gap, fall to the left and break through the next leftmost column of rock blocks. When breaking the fourth and last rock block, hold the jump button to get the longest air time possible. This will effectively avoid bouncing off the Hand lurking right below you, and will save a total of approximately 8 frames. Break the last rock block, and you should have captured the flag at 2:35!
Overall, not too hard of a level, the hardest part being the jump to collect the Red Stealth helmet; it's moderately precise. While this level certainly is not the most generous score-wise due to some unfortunately dumb reasons, at least it is easier to max than the previous level, Madmaze Mountain. So if you wish to attempt it, I wish everyone luck in achieving the highest score on the lowest score in the game! :P
