Based on the old-but-gold and moving adult visual novels, "ef - the first tale." and "ef - the latter tale.", popular titles from "Minori" (stylized as "minori"), "Killjoy Hunter Yuuko" is more of a bite-sized fan game than a proper follow-up to Minori's previous works, which offers a brief and slightly humorous look into the gang's happenings directly after the latter tale. This is because it was originally a bonus game that was part of "ef - A Fairy Tale of the Two Pleasurable Box". Originally based on a manga written back in 2005 that gave a general overview of the franchise, the visual novels were released back in 2006/2008 and had a strong cult following, eventually spawning a two-season Anime series, Internet Radio Shows, Drama CDs, light novels and more.

The games were eventually fan-translated into English by the group, "No Name Losers", but Minori had a strong anti-piracy and fan-translation stance, eventually blocking the website to everyone who didn't reside in Japan and who made it harder to get access to the games. MangaGamer eventually partnered with No Name Losers and Minori and gained the rights to release the games worldwide in late 2013, and they finally released the games on Steam in 2019. While this game isn't technically "Doujin", Minori was a fairly low profile developer with "ef" as their stand-out franchise and this game might not get enough attention otherwise.

The game is an incredibly basic action/platformer comprised of four main stages and two final bosses where players take the role of the tragic heroine, Yuuko, as she eradicates "Killjoys" in her search to figure out the roots of the characters nightmares in the dream world. There are story scenes at the start of a stage and before/after boss battles... almost none of this game will make sense if you haven't played the games or watched the anime, but the little bit of dialogue that's present isn't anything to write home about. Yuuko does battle with a holy "Cheekama Blade" which has laughably short range, a special attack which emits a weak short range projectile, and she can jump on most enemies ala Super Mario Bros. (some enemies have means of defending against jumping attacks). There are a few basic pick-ups to restore health and gain invincibility, and letters you can collect (which give three extra lives if you manage to find them all).

The stages and regular enemies have just enough variety to not overstay their welcome as the game runs for about 30-60 minutes on average, but the bosses are another matter -- they have overly simple patterns and with no time limits, you can take your time to figure them out (the hardest part is hitting them without getting hit back). The game attempts to add challenge to them as you have very few invincibility frames after getting hit and each boss has a special attack that makes them temporarily invulnerable, but most of them can be taken out before they take you out (and their special attacks have major openings to let you deal big damage). Even if you die, you start right at the boss and can try again, though you won't get that sweet "No Miss" bonus, so I suppose it's an issue for high score hunters. I like that each difficulty does more than just adjust enemy speed or power.

The audio/visuals are fairly simple but get the job done and is a little charming in some spots (Yuuko's walking animation is cute, the final boss area is pretty cool, etc.), but as the game was only released for $3, you really shouldn't expect much. It's a cool little time waster for fans of "ef" and "Minori" and while there are better Steam titles for the price, you probably won't lose sleep over a $3 game you're on the fence about getting, so just get it if you like action games and platformers. Considering it was originally just a bonus game, one could even say that there was a fair bit of effort in its development. If nothing else, it might peak your interest in the visual novels and associated media.

This is a simple video of the game in action. You can learn more about "ef" at:
