For a first boss Twilight Thorn is pretty difficult, you can't make many mistakes as he can kill you in 3 hits.

The only real safe time to attack him is when he's stood up shooting the things at you, reaction command them and when you get close to his face do a 3 hit combo then fall and wait for another reaction command before hitting him again, sometimes you can fall down into his sweeping attack which seems unavoidable but it doesn't happen often, if you're on the floor then get ready to run sideways if he jumps from the area as he'll charge forward waving his arms, when he's not stood up then just keep your distance.

You can also attack him whilst he's leaning down waving his arms around as he does when I finish him off, any other time you attack him you're at risk of being hit back.

After he paralysis you for the group of reaction commands for a 2nd time then he'll do his circular form attack, you can get 3 combos in on him before this starts then just keep using reversal, if your at his head when it stops then get a combo in and go in front of his head a little to get a few more hits in as he moves forwards, now when when he's stood up attacking with the reversal stuff he does in constantly so you can only get 1 or 2 hits in after each reaction command but he'll die in very few attacks.
