Kingdoms of Amalur - The Armor System?

1I don't understand the armor system here. I put on a piece of armor (gloves) that seem to be better - higher armor stat and a higher percent bonus - but my total armor rating goes down a few hundred points. What's going on here? All my armor is custom forged, so I'm not dealing with any set bonuses.
Why does better armor with a better bonus result in lower total armor overall?
