FromSoftware's debut game for the PS1 from 1994, King's Field. This is one that a few people have requested. This is a series that I had not had much experience but after doing a hack for Shadow Tower I followed up with this and King's Field II and I can say I'm a fan of the series.

The combat is obviously quite simple but it's engaging enough and there's little strategies you can employ to keep it interesting. The leveling system along with new equipment allows you do more damage which makes the combat more satisfying. Also there seems to be random rare drops from enemies which is pretty cool too. The real draw to the game is the music and the lore.

The music builds the atmosphere of these games and this first one in particular has tracks that really make you feel the danger of the world the you inhabit. The first track in the game makes you feel like you're in an old horror film and builds a sense of dread that is hard to get from other games. That along with the lore and story being given to you through little tidbits and context clues makes it very engaging if you give it your attention. It's easy to see how they got from this to something like Dark Souls because a lot of same ideas behind the core game design and story delivery have remained through the years.

These games aren't for everyone but if you can put yourself in the adventure mindset then you can get a lot of enjoyment from these games.
