Augusta used to be a busy railroad town.

For decades Union Station, facing Barrett Plaza between Eighth and Ninth streets, gave travelers their first view of the Garden City.
But if those visitors had strolled a block east they would have seen the grittier aspect of train travel – the Georgia Railroad shops.
