Kunio Sports #9 (PS4) Bikkuri Nekketsu Shinkiroku: Harukanaru Kin Medal
Playing the Famicom game "Bikkuri Nekketsu Shinkiroku: Harukanaru Kin Medal" in "Kunio-kun: The World Classics Collection" on PS4. It would come to the NES as "Crash n' the Boys: Street Challenge"--which is also included in this collection ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cz8y_9WbpXU ), so I shouldn't have spent so much time in this version where I couldn't understand the menus, but I didn't know it was the same game as Crash at the time. : P
I really do not like this game. It's sort of the extreme of a lot of the Kunio sports games: great music, super cute, amusing graphics, lots of cartoony physical violence, probably decent sort of party-game-style fun for a bit when played with friends; single-player against the CPU, though, it feels like the complete opposite of fun, with cludgy, punishing controls, repetitive action, and a CPU who doesn't seem bothered by that in the slightest and just owns you over and over.
There are five sort of track and field events, none of which I was able to enjoy: hurdles (just make the finish line appear now, please!), hammer throw (mash 'dem buttons! mash faster!), a swimming race where the CPU just jumps on you and drowns you (or at least me : P), a kind of rooftop long-jumping race also incorporating pole vaulting and unicycles, neither of which I could get the hang of, and a judo contest with more mysterious controls.
I'm incredibly bad at all of them and don't see much reason to try to change that. : P Will I do better in the NES version? Ha! Ha!
