The Beat Up #27 - River City Ransom (PS4) Part 1: Burgers to go!
I've owned and played the Japanese version of River City Ransom on GBA and PC Engine, but even though the PCE version definitely and maybe the GBA version were "enhanced" ports over the NES version, I couldn't read any of the copious amounts of text, so had no idea what I was buying in all the shops and so forth.
Well here finally in "Kunio-kun: The World Classics Collection," along with the (Japanese) Famicom version, Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FBbxlH1hgg , is the (English) NES version, River City Ransom, and with sprite-flicker removal (you can play the old flickery version too, if you're weird : P). So...will I finally play through River City Ransom??
Well, I mean to try. I seem to be bad at it so far; like, I'm running out of cash keeping myself alive after taking lots of beatings from street punks. You can farm them for money to buy stuff, I guess, but eh they keep hitting me a lot. But if you do croak it, you just appear back in the last little strip mall you came from, so come to think of it I'm not sure why I'm spending all my cash on healing myself. Then again, you do get permanent stat increases from all the various food items you can buy, which I guess is how you "level up" in this game, so I suppose it's just as well I've been doing that.
(Oh, also I guess I missed that you lose half your dough if you die http://kuniokun.wikia.com/wiki/Downtown_Nekketsu_Monogatari#Money : P)
Still gotta get better at fighting, though. The tricky part here is that it seems awfully basic: punch, kick, and jump-kick; the big switcheroo so far are the hand-to-hand weapons you can pick up and use, which definitely help against the relentless gangs of street thugs.
The other daunting part of all this is that I have no idea where I'm going; there are so many shops, thug-packed streets, and little intersections, that I always have the nagging feeling that I'm headed the wrong way to eh rescue my buddy's girlfriend or whatever. Is there even a right way? Is this just an existential thing? Or is it actually just really good at dressing up a fairly linear game?
