The Beat Up #29 (PS4) Downtown Special: Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki da yo Zenin Shugo!
Getting lost and running around in circles in (*deep breath*) "Downtown Special: Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki da yo Zenin Shugo!", a Famicom game included in "Kunio-kun: The World Classics Collection" on PS4.
It's pretty much a "River City Ransom" set in medieval Japan: as in RCR, you roam around--only here it's through almost Escher-esque mazelike countrysides, rather than city streets and alleys--fighting off gangs of thugs, with stops in peaceful little mini-mall-ish villages in between where you can buy stuff to heal up and make yourself a stronger fighter.
I think. It's all in Japanese so I can't really tell what I'm buying in the shops, and I can only get myself going in circles in the countryside--you can swim out to dead-end islands in the sea for no reason I could see, or spelunk through caves that seem to have no possible spacial relationship to their surface exits.
(I missed this: hitting B at the pause screen apparently brings up a map. http://kuniokun.wikia.com/wiki/Downtown_Special:_Kunio-kun_no_Jidaigeki_da_yo_Zen%27in_Sh%C5%ABg%C5%8D!#Areas I guess it's a map of the whole country so that wouldn't have gotten me un-lost in countryside mazes, still at least I would have known *where* I was lost, broadly speaking. ; )
One big thing Zenin Shugo has that River City doesn't is that if you play single-player, a CPU team-mate comes along with you. And they can actually be fairly useful in a fight! Watch him go to town 1-on-2 while I unfairly take a little breather on an odd island cliff thing at 6:09 , for instance.
That still doesn't save me from getting lost in the countryside or in the shops through so I probably won't be playing this one much. : o (After all, the World Classics Collection also has River City Ransom -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHl25lN09pQ -- which so far I have been much less lost in!)
