1. The Gupta empire- It was established by Srigupta in 275 CE. He was suceeded by his son Ghatotkacha gupta. he ruled from 280 CE to 319 CE.
2. Successive kings of Gupta dynasty-Srigupta,Ghatotkachagupta, Chandragupta-I, Samudragupta, Ramagupta, Chandragupta-II, Kuamrgupta-I, Skandagupta, Purugupta, Kumaragupta-II, Buddhagupta, Narsimhagupta,, Kumaragupta-III, Vishnugupta, Vainyagupta,Bhanugupta
3. Important rulers- Chandragupta-I(Ruled over 319 CE-335 CE). He assumed the title Maharajadhiraj.
Samudragupta- He succeeded his father Chandragupta in 335 CE. Main sources of the period of Samudragupta inscription of Ashoka pillar at Allahabad, Eran Edicts, coins of Samudragupta, He was also known as Napolean of India. We also get information about Samudragupta from prashasti by poet Harisena of his court.
Chandragupta-II→ He was the son of Samudragupta and succeeded him in 375 CE. He was also known as Vikramaditya. According to an inscription on the Iron pillar in mehrauli. This inscription also tells about the victory of Chandragupta. He had many scholars, poets and artists in his courts. The best nine was known as navratna. Kalidasa and Aryabhatta was among this navratna.
Administration. The supreme power was in the hand of the king, He had a council of ministers to assist and advice him but he was not bound to accept their advice. The empire was divided into provinces known as Bhuktis. governed by Uparika Maharaja or Bhogpati. The Buktis were divided into Vishyas. Their head was known as Vishayapati.Village headman was known as Grameyak. Military leaders were known as Samantas who supplied troops to the kings.
