India’s contact with Sri Lanka
Indian’s started setting in Sri lanka from 6th century BCE onwards
The ruler of Bengal conquered Sri Lanka and established the rule of Singhal dynasty
Ashoka sent his son Mahendra and daughter Sanghamitra to preach Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
The ruler of Sri Lanka, Tissa also sent a delegation to meet Ashoka.
Mahavamsa and Deepvamsa are main sources of history of our relations with Sri Lanka.
Buddhism became very popular there. A buddhist monk of Sri Lanka Buddaghosh, wrote the commentries on Jataka.
India’s contact with China
1. Our contact with China started from 65 BCE.
2. Many chinese scholars and travellers(Hiun-tsang, I-Tsing, Fa-hien) came to India and studied Buddhist literature and doctrines.
3. Many Buddhist monks visited China to propogate Buddhism.
4. We had political and trade relations with China. Indians learnt the art of paper making, silk making, sculpture and paintings.
5. Chinese learnt the art of cotton growing, Buddhist literature and doctrines from Indians
India’s contact with South-East Asian Countries
1.Buddhism had already reached these countries. Many Indian traders visited and settled there.
2.Brahmadesh (Myanmar or Burma), Suvarnadipa (Java, Sumatra, Bali), Champa(Vietnam), kamboja(Cambodia), Borneo(Indonesia) were the places where Hindus had made their colonies.
3.Sanskrit was their main language proved by their Inscriptions found there.
4.In the cave in Borneo,12 red stone images of Shiva, Ganesh, Nandi, Skand Mahakal have been found proof the existence of Indian culture and religion.

5) In Bali the impact of Hindu Culture and religion can still be seen. Vishnu, Shiva, Ganesh, Rama and Krishna are worshipped even today.
6) In Java, a magnificient stupa at Barobudur (8 miles from Jakrata) have built on a hill top. There is a big statue of Buddha nad nearly 1500 Buddhist paintings on the corridors.
7) Hindu culture and traditions are still followed.
There are examples of great exchange of Culture, art & architecture between two countries.
India’s contact with South-East Asian Countries
1.The reference of Champa is found in Vayu Puran. It was estalished in 192 BCE.
2.A grand Shiva mandir was built there.
3.Saka era is also followed there.
4.In Kamboj Saka Samvat and Sanskrit language was used there.
5.In 9th century Yashoverma founded a new city known as Yashodpur.
6.Indian gods were worshipped there. A large Shiv Mandir was constructed.
7.It was great centre of Vedic learning.
8.Angkorvats Vishnu temple in Combodia is one of the largest temple in the world.
Buddhism and its teachings were the main factors for creating our contacts with different parts of Asia and west.
