L-dis (エルディス) Super CD-ROM
This is my playthrough on normal difficulty, which I shamefully had to use the Infinite Lives cheat. I didn't have enough time to practise this game and to be honest, it's so hard, I don't know if I could ever do it legit! Maybe one day
Review - This game looks amazing. It has really nicely drawn artwork for the enemies. You can choose which sub-weapon (option) set that you will use throughout the game. The manual said the type A weapons were best for novices but it lied. The weapon set is awful. None of them shoot simultaneously up and down which is imperative for cave-like areas. One of them only shoots forward as opposed to the backwards shooting ones in the other sets. The other 2 sets are far better.
The game has some great levels but the major problem is, that this game is hard. Ultra hard.
I managed to complete the game on easy legit but it stops you at 4 levels in. The last level took me forever to do. There are infinite continues, but it doesn’t really matter with this game. Once you get passed the 4th level, starting with no power ups is impossible. You have to do this game in one run, collecting power ups on the way. You can power up your main weapon 6 times but the power up collection is very rare and you lose it all when you die. So really, you have to do this game with 1 life. If you lose your power ups, you have no chance. This game is insanely difficult.
Some bosses require that you have a backwards shooting weapon too so if you don’t, you will definitely lose all your lives. This difficulty is a shame for this game.
But there is one saving grace - a cheat menu. You can give yourself infinite lives, upgrade your weapons fully, become invincible, choose the amount of shields you have. I bet everyone on earth used this cheat. I can’t see how anyone did it without the them.
I tried to minimise the cheating by only using infinite lives for my normal playthrough but it made the game a real slog because as soon as I died, I would lose my power ups, so I couldn’t stay alive for long at all. A couple of bosses dragged really long too since I couldn’t shoot backwards.
All in all, this game is brilliant if you cheat. It’s just too much of a chore and headache if you don’t. Shame.
