Kyukyoku Tiger (Twin Cobra) 1CC Playthrough | PC-Engine (TurboGrafx-16) | Real Hardware | 0 continue
Kyūkyoku Tiger/Kyukyoku Taiga (究極タイガー ) AKA Twin Cobra on TurboGrafx-16 in America. This is also the PC-Engine version of the NES game known as Tiger Heli.
I was expecting this game to be a short blast that I could beat in one sitting since the NES version – Tiger Heli is only 4 short levels that loop infinitely. But this game is far more advanced. There are 10 levels in total and an incredible difficulty level. This is one of the hardest games I have ever completed.
The bosses are so difficult that I had to practise each one with save states on an emulator dozens of times each so I could find a strategy that works. The 5th and 10th level in particular need complete cheesing as I could not find a way to beat it with skill. There is just nowhere to move because of the rain of bullets and also homing bullets coming in from the side. I don’t know how this game would be possible without cheesing. In fact, I tried to look for other video’s and guides online to point me in the right direction but there wasn’t any legit runs or guides. This playthrough is a pioneer.
The levels are seriously difficult too but at least there are plenty of checkpoints.
Full disclosure, I entered the 9 continues cheat and could definitely do this game without the cheat. My entire run hinges on the last level. I have to do it without getting hit. If I do, I can’t get the weapon that shoots sideways, which it the only way I can hit the boss without dying. I have to throw 2 bombs to destroy the turrets and make my way to the top left turret where the homing bullets can’t hit me. On this run I did get hit by a stray bullet as I was nearly at the safe point so I thought my run was over because the checkpoint is too close but I clutched out a crazy strategy. I had lots of lives left due to entering the cheat, so I intentionally killed myself about 20 times because every time you die twice, you get sent to the previous checkpoint. I kept doing this until I was taken back to the start of the level for a second and final attempt. This would save me an hour of having to do the whole game again just to make this attempt.
Fortunately, I clutched out my second attempt without getting hit. I know I can do this game without the continues cheat but I want to move on. I spent far too much time on this game already because it is so insanely difficult.
But doing this game was one hell of an experience and I proud of this achievement.
*EDIT – I couldn’t leave this game to rest because I knew I could do it without cheats, so I kept persevering and this is my later run with one credit. Now I can be truly proud.
