Cole and Roy reach Robert's Diner just in time to see two shooters trying to drive off, ultimately engaging them in a chase that turns into a brief shootut which Cole and Roy win. Upon searching one of the shooters' corpses, Cole finds a notebook revealing that Courtney Sheldon is set to meet Mickey Cohen that night and a copy of the manifest containing the names of S. S. Coolridge's passengers which shooters used as a makeshift hit list. Realizing that Mickey Cohen sent out his death squads to keep on hunting down all Marines involved in morphine robbery until someone cracks and hands the drugs over, Cole and Roy head towards another place mentioned on the hit list; Post office in Hollywood where they find LAPD officers already engaged in shootout with several hitmen. After eliminating them, Cole searches the corpses of two Marines with one who is still alive using the last of his strength to reveal that Courtney Sheldon suggested that they do the robbery with a business card for Polar Bear Ice Company held by a dying Marine confirming that they had dealings with Jewish mob. On another corpse, Cole finds an adress; An alleyway in Las Palmas where Courtney and Cohen are to meet that night. Afterwards, Cole and Roy head towards another place mentioned in the hit list; Chinese Theatre. There, Cole and Roy come just in time to see Cohen's hitmen gun down two more Marines as they exit the theatre, engaging them in a chase and ultimately killing them. With most of the unit dead, Cole and Roy decide to head towards Las Palmas to investigate the planned meeting between Courtney and Cohen but quickly discover that it was a trap, finding themselves forced to fight off more of Cohen's goons. As they return to their car, two detectives are contacted by KGPL which states that Courtney Sheldon came to Hollywood station and wants an interview with Cole. Upon reaching the station, Donnelly meets two detectives at the door, asking Roy to follow him into his office while Cole is left to interrogate Courtney who came in accompanied by Harlan Fontaine. During the interrogation, Courtney tries to deny his culpability for military morphine circulating in Los Angeles even in the face of damning evidence against him, cracking only once Cole threatens to have Jack Kelso locked up instead despite his own innocence in the matter. Just as Courtney prepares to confess, a police chief and Donnelly barge into the interrogation room, informimg Cole that he is being suspended from duty pending a fitness review and send him into the chief's office. Once there, Cole is confronted with the evidence of the sexual encounter he had with Elsa Lichtmann previous night, reasoning behind the suspension being the fact that Cole will officially be charged with adultery. After being officially suspended, Cole rushes back home to try and plead his case with his wife, Marie but is kicked out. Officially disgraced and with nowhere left to go, Cole ultimately goes to Elsa's apartment and moves in with her.

Previous night, police chief and several other important figures in Los Angeles' administration were discussing how to effectively cover up Brenda Allen sex scandal without excerbating the issue further and were unable to come up with effective conclusion until Roy Earle came in, telling everyone present about Cole's adultery and suggesting that they use that information in order to divert public attention from Brenda Allen scandal and onto Cole since public knowledge of his marital infidelity would tarnish his reputation to the point where it would be impossible to ignore, a plan which everyone agrees to...
