LEADERBOARD - Masterclass - 007 - How to Master Phone Calls (Part 2)
THEME: Communication
LESSON: How to Master Phone Calls - Part 2
Phone calls. Yes. We all have important ones and want to maximize the impact, which can be hard to do when you aren’t face-to-face.
Many entrepreneurs have grown up digital natives so they have a really good intuitive feel for technology & design but don’t yet have the business basics down.
This shows itself when people try to do an elevator pitch, send concise and actionable emails or make a quick phone call to ask for help. Getting that call just right is a difficult skill.
Let's look at a few more tricks and tips:
1) KNOW YOUR ASK
Don’t ask for four things or you’ll get none. Your one question should be obvious and easily achievable. Pick your time carefully and remember to accept rejection gracefully and always keep the door open.
2) KNOW THE RELATIONSHIP
Don’t ask for a big favour unless you have a tight relationship. Your network isn’t just the number of connections you know. It’s the quality of relationships. Who is going to help you if they don't really know you? Trust takes time.
3) KNOW THE TIMELINE
Assume this won’t be the only time in your life that you’ll talk on the phone. So, you don’t need to fit everything into a single conversation. If you cultivate a good long-term relationship through patience, persistence and reciprocity there will be many more occasions. Work at it.
4) KEEP IT SHORT
Your reputation is the sum of the interactions people have with you. Understand that we ALL have limited time. As a result, think of your relationship with the individual as a relationship you’ll build over a long time and over many short calls. Very often less is more.
I hope this helps.
The truth is that it’s part of human nature to want to try and help others. The classic phone call is not just about information but also about helping people with problems beyond themselves.
Consider this:
You’d be surprised how many people will find ways to help if asked appropriately, at the right time, politely and by the right person.
Use this knowledge to your advantage.
