LESSON: A Game Plan for Dealing With Angry People - Part 2
All by taking a deep breath and staying compassionate in the face of rage we can transform our lives. It is not always easy to be able to pull it off. But, every time you do it, you'll be helping yourself grow the neural pathways for a more emotionally intelligent brain.
Furthermore, you will be gifting yourself a lot less drama and hopefully, a lot more love.
Accepting emotions is the beginning of resilience. Gradually, you will internalize the ability to weather disappointment, and learn that you can always get something better. Emotions that we can understand aren't that dangerous.
They can be tolerated without acting on them, and they pass.
Let's look at some strategies for dealing with those difficult situations.
1. Empathize
- Sometimes your only job is to calm the storm.
2. (Understand that) We all need to let off steam
- Support in difficult times helps people feel closer to us and more trusting.
3. (Know that) Anger is often a defense against a threat
- Whatever is happening in the moment can trigger old feelings that cause "fight mode"
4. Try not to evaluate too much
- Most of the time the real reason for a meltdown is not present in the room
5. Teach and model self control
- Everybody wants to know that their voice is being heard so listen very carefully
By helping people with their emotions, you're making a repeat infraction less likely.
After the emotional closure, keep it simple. Recognize that everybody wants to make a better choice next time, and align with that part. Be sure to give them a chance to practice a better solution to their problem.
Don't turn a drama in to a crisis.
Think about it.
