About the Marquee Tool
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The Marquee tool is effectively a masking tool. Masking means you make a selection, and that selection allows you to make changes only to the area you have chosen and isolate the rest of the image from being changed.

Marquee Tool Options
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Select the Marquee Tool in the tool bar. Once chosen, you can click and drag across your image to make a selection. The selection will be in the form of moving pixels that form a rectangle.

You can also make selections in an elliptical or circular fashion.

* If you wish to access this tool quickly, press M on your keyboard. To access the other tool under the Marquee tool, press and hold Shift+M to cycle through the other tool options.

1. Clicking and dragging will produce a rectangle (or oval), but to make a perfect square (or a perfect circle depending on which marquee tool is chosen) press and hold Shift while you click and drag.2. To make a marquee that expands outward from the center of your mouse cursor, press and hold Alt/Option+Mouse button, then click and drag.3. To make a perfect square/circle that expands outward from the center of your mouse cursor, press and hold Shift+Alt/Option+Mouse button, then click and drag.4. When you've created your marquee, be sure to let go of the mouse button first, not the keyboard buttons. 5. If you wish to make more than one selection, press and hold Shift once you've created your first selection, then click and drag in another area of your image. When you let go, both selections will remain on your image.6. If you wish to combine two different marquees, press and hold Shift while clicking and dragging a new marquee over an existing marquee. When you let go of the mouse, they will automatically combine.7. If you want to remove a piece of the marquee, press and hold Alt/Option and click and drag over one of the marquees that you wish to remove. When you let go, it will be subtracted.8. When you've created your marquee, you have various options:
* You can invert your selection to edit everything around it.
* You can paint inside the selection without affecting anything outside of it.
* You can fill your selection.
* You can cut out your selection.
* You can copy your selection.
* You can make a new layer out of your selection.
* For direct options, Right-Click/Ctrl+Mouse click inside your selection and choose.
