Fans of my channel will know I'm a big Golden Axe fan. This was obviously a Sega exclusive but the SNES got 3 medieval themed beat-em-ups to compete with Sega's high fantasy beat-em-up offering. The first two from Capcom, King of Dragons & Knights of the Round were both excellent & I'll do a video at some point.

This game, Legend, however was somewhat of a missed opportunity. It has some good points like large, detailed, well animated sprites & some nice backdrops & effects like the fog & the rain etc however the game does get very repetitive, not just in gameplay but in terms of graphics which get re-used a lot (even the 2nd player is the same sprite just in a different colour and with an axe instead of a sword but plays identically) & music which repeats a couple of tracks over & over - meaning each level or stage doesn't tend to feel distinct.

The gameplay is a little sluggish but I think this is intended to give you time to use the shield to block. Limited moves & enemies that may look different but all require the same tactics mean this gets repetitive very quickly. A shame as it feels like with a little more work this could have been a lot better. I wonder whether they originally intended more RPG type elements with the magic & the fact that if an enemy hits you with a net it throws you into jail as an alternative level. Just feels like this needed a little more polish.

This got average reviews back in the magazines at the time so i held off it until I found a cheap unboxed copy in the shop I was working in as a student. It's an ok game but there are far better on SNES (and many better beat em up son the Megadrive too) Still if you like this sort of fantast setting it can be fun with a 2nd player - just a shame as it hints at being a lot better than it actually is. it's the definition of a 6 - solid & functional but lacking anything special.

I'm also sorting my loft and finding all sorts of obscurities, oddities and nice games from my collection so I'll be doing some random vids. Let me know if there is a console or game you'd like to see. Let me know if there are any games or consoles you'd like videos about. Let me know if you like the format (i.e. no voiceover and the addition of short facts). Want End Cards added to point out other similar videos? I'm just trying things really.

As always the game cart is played on original hardware - no emulation etc This is played on my Super Nintendo.

As always if you enjoy this video let me know.

As always this is uploaded under the Fair Use Policy - no money is being made from this video.

Stay strong, stay safe and stay healthy - Grey Fox
