Fans of my channel may remember I did a GameBoy Advent Countdown a couple of years back & a Jagvent Calendar last year - a different mystery game each day of December. I thought I'd do something a similar this year for the Sega Master System - a console I have lots of fond memories of.

I won't reveal the game in the Title but in the Description.......well that's a different matter. Does anyone other than me actually read them?

This is Golden Axe by Sega - a port of their Conan inspired scrolling beat-em-up that was a smash hit in the arcade. This was actually one of the few arcade games I ever finished - me & a mate finished it while on a school trip (the Dragon magic literally blew our minds!) then got in trouble for being late back to the coach - totally worth it though!

So I drooled over screenshots of the Megadrive version & when I got that played it over & over - the two additional levels a pleasant surprise, 2 player simultaneous, the Duel Mode. Such good memories. It felt arcade perfect (although it wasn't perfect it was close enough that it truly felt like you had the arcade machine at home)

Years later I picked up the Master System version - more as a curio. It's nowhere near as good as the Megadrive game & disappointing in lots of ways. In order to recreate the arcade look as closely as possible it made clever use of background graphics to enable large character sprites etc. similar techniques were used for things like the Mortal Kombat port. The pay-off for this though is a choppy frame-rate & controls that feel sluggish (or inconsistent).

Also - naturally the port was cut back severely being single player only & only having a single selectable character - effectively this is Ax Battler but here he is renamed to Tarik for some reason. You do get the full choice of the 3 different Magic options though. A shame as this nearly nails it. Impressive technical feat though. As a fan of the series I picked up a loose cart just to have as a curio but there are better ways to play this classic game & better beat-em-ups on the system.

This is my original PAL copy from back in the day played through a Powerbase convertor on my CDX/MultiMega through a Retrotink 5X for ease of capture.

Expect a different Master System game every day. Happy Christmas!

As always if you enjoy this video let me know. As always this is running on original hardware. Also let me know if there are particular games or systems you'd like to see.

As always this is uploaded under the Fair Use Policy - no money is being made from this video.
