There are two reasons to get rid of Mappi first. He and Gehrich have a devastating combo attack and not having to deal with that makes the fight much easier. He also has an instant kill attack which is obviously bad news. Gehrich isn't much of a threat by himself. He isn't extremely fast and you can just guard a few times to heal any damage he inflicts.
