Preview (artworks) du jeu Legend of Sayuki sur Wii tel qu'il aurait dû être à l'origine : une suite à Kiki KaiKai. Un studio japonais (peu réputé) dénommé Starfish s’était lancé dans la production d'une suite officielle à Kiki KaiKai (Pocky and Rocky) pour la GameCube puis pour la Wii. Le jeu semblait bien avancé (voir ces images) mais lorsque Taito fut racheté par Square Enix la marque Kiki KaiKai subit les affres d’innombrables imbroglios juridiques et Starfish dut laisser tomber l’affaire. Mais plutôt que de tirer un trait définitif sur des mois de travail acharné, les Japonais de Starfish ont eu la lumineuse idée de modifier leur bébé afin de pouvoir le terminer et l’éditer eux-mêmes. Bon an, mal an, ils ont donc gardé le gameplay originel (shoot pédestre à scrolling libre) mais fait table rase de toutes les références directes à Kiki KaiKai (voyez le résultat final dans le trailer inclus, sur Switch - après la PS2 et la Wii, le jeu est en effet également sorti sur Switch et PS4). L’héroïne shintoïste est désormais une déesse des neiges, elle ne lance plus d’o-fuda mais de la glace (qui peut d’ailleurs paralyser ses ennemis), les décors emblématiques de la série ont disparu (même si on baigne toujours dans la sauce médiévale-fantastique à la japonaise) et les yôkai les plus célèbres (qui appartiennent pourtant au domaine public) sont pour la plupart aux abonnés absents – à l’exception de quelques tengu et autres ittan-momen.

Here are some artworks of the first cancelled version of Heavenly Guardian (with the trailer of the released version for Switch).
Heavenly Guardian was originally an intended GameCube and later Wii sequel to Taito's Kiki KaiKai series (better known as Pocky & Rocky outside Japan) called simply "Kiki KaiKai 2". The game was canceled, as Starfish SD lost the Kiki KaiKai license, but would later resurface as a Wii game entitled "Kiki Kai World". This version was mostly similar to the canceled Wii game, but with the main character's miko outfit recolored from red to blue. Instead of being a direct sequel to the original, it was more of a spiritual successor, as to avoid legal issues with Taito and its parent company, Square Enix.

To further separate the game from Kiki KaiKai, the graphics and theme of the game were completely redone, replacing the miko heroine with a snow goddess named Sayuki. When approached about the subject, a company spokesperson said "to make a long story short, Taito, who is now owned by Square Enix, had some issues with us and we had to let the title go", implying that Square Enix was the reason behind the initial cancellation.
