Let's Challenge Super Mario 64 (Closeup Run) - Part 1: There will be cake..and ice cream
I still don't know what to do about the Hyphy Movement, the San Francisco Bay Area residents who prove that it doesn't deserve to be called the "Yay Area", the shallow girls who would say "wanna suck my pee" just to mock me, and the Oakland rioters. But remember that surprise I mentioned in the outro of my Battalion Wars LP? Well, this is the surprise. I am going through Super Mario 64 with the camera set to close up as frequently as possible. And I have to thank MarioMastar for his LP inspiring me to get this off the ground. He knows quite a bit about the game--both the N64 version and the DS version. So consider checking his LP out. As for the challenge itself? I actually did this when I was young and the game was less than 3 years old. So far, it's not proving easy, but so it goes. (And I'd do the courses in order if not for worries about creating filler time spent on gathering 1-Ups.)
Super Mario 64 is a rather solid game, as everybody knows. Of course, everybody would have played it at this point, which is a double-edged sword. This means there'd be tons of videos to compete with for it, but I won't have to worry about doing too much commentary, as opposed to with Battalion Wars, which is actually obscure--even the sequel isn't going to be easy to notice. Luckily, I can work with the idea of the run: the challenge. Simply, I keep the camera up-close through the whole game as much as possible.
The plot is simplistic. Basically, Princess Peach invites Mario to her castle for cake, which mercifully isn't a lie, but it's merely the plot device of an Excuse Plot where Bowser takes over the castle, controls the Power Stars, and hides them in locations found by going through paintings and whatnot. Ah well.
I first go to Bob-Omb Battlefield, where at the top of the mountain is the King Bob-Omb. Bob-Omb Battlefield is the first course, and rather simplistic as a result, so not much to say about that, just watch out for the iron balls. As for King Bob-Omb, get behind him, grab him, and toss him around his field. Don't try to regrab him immediately, he will keep facing you until he starts moving again. Once you toss him 3 times, he will cough up the star.
After that, I go to Princess's Secret Slide where in addition to the star for completing the course, there's a secret star for beating it within 21 seconds as well. You can use a shortcut to shave off a few seconds, but as you see, I don't need it.
With that, I have the 3 stars needed for the 4th course, Cool Cool Mountain. The first star requires simply going through the ice slide within the cabin, where one false move will lead you to an untimely demise. You can use a shortcut I'll demonstrate later to handle this star, but MarioMastar recommends using this star to get the 100 coin star. That's what I do, though in retrospect, the red coin star may also be recommended.
Oh yeah. I also talk to CCM's Bob-Omb Buddy. Though getting out of there without dying requires a precision jump I unfortunately mess up.
