Let's Challenge Super Mario 64 (Closeup Run) - Part 3: Vanishing generousity
I still don't know what to do about the Hyphy Movement, the San Francisco Bay Area residents who prove that it doesn't deserve to be called the "Yay Area", the shallow girls who would say "wanna suck my pee" just to mock me, and the Oakland rioters. But remember that surprise I mentioned in the outro of my Battalion Wars LP? Well, this is the surprise. I am going through Super Mario 64 with the camera set to close up as frequently as possible. And I have to thank MarioMastar for his LP inspiring me to get this off the ground. He knows quite a bit about the game--both the N64 version and the DS version. So consider checking his LP out. As for the challenge itself? I actually did this when I was young and the game was less than 3 years old. So far, it's not proving easy, but so it goes. (And I'd do the courses in order if not for worries about creating filler time spent on gathering 1-Ups.)
After taking care of the Wall Jump star in CCM, that's one course cleaned out. Then I check out the weird light that suddenly appeared in the main room and WHOA!
Tower of the Wing Cap is a simple circular flight for the Red Coins, but even that proves to be a pain because of the Wing Cap's bothersome controls and the fact that you can't get any of the first 6 Red Coins on a subsequent flight, so you have to make sure you grab them on the first flight. The 7th and 8th coins, however, don't need to be grabbed yet, though it would help to grab them. As for the tower itself, it is small enough that the the switch that when pressed triggers all of the Wing Cap boxes (the red ones) easily stands out.
Now that that's taken care of, I go downstairs to the locked door, though not before noticing a Boo in a corridor. With the key from Bowser, the lower areas of the castle are unlocked. In one section, there's a waterway leading to a couple of pillars. Pounding them down empties the water from the waterway and the moat, and opens the gate to a new course.
Vanish Cap Under the Moat is another straightforward path starting with a steep hill with some red coins. After that, some precision jumping is required, especially with those rotating platforms, which is the first time where closeup can be really bothersome, because messing up can easily send you on a one-way trip out of the course. Once you clear it, however, the Vanish Cap switch can be stomped on to activate the Vanish Cap boxes (the blue ones this time), the last Red Coin is practically given to you, and the star is just a matter of getting a Vanish Cap to go through the blocking grate.
