Plague doctors have such an iconic appearance. Normally they are cloaked in black robes with the white bird mask being the most outstanding feature. The mask contained goggles for the wearer to see while maintaining a barrier from contamination. The beak of the mask essentially served as a respirator; the beak will hold aromatics or herbs to prevent miasma from infecting the wearer. These sinister-looking practitioners served in the 17th century to assist anyone suffering from the rampant plague ravaging early European civilization. In truth, unfortunately, they were rarely helpful, and to the victims, plague doctors were mostly seen as a symbol of death rather than salvation.
Thymesia is a Bloodborne-like game developed by OverBorder Studio. The protagonist is Corvus, who is possibly an assassin dressed as a plague doctor.
