Crusader Kings 2 is a game set during the medieval period in which you play a land holding noble. You build a royal family, scheme, steal titles, kill rivals, conduct court politics, develop holdings, be betrothed to 10 year olds, go on crusades and generally speaking inbreed a lot. Today we check out the new DLC "The Old Gods", which allows players to play as pagans ranging from the Magyar of eastern Europe, to the Norse of Scandinavia, to the Slavs in central europe. Instead of paying your allegiance to the pope, you pay it to swift winds, cold steel, Odin and metal music.

This is my first time playing. I'm in a game with Lancer, who is playing the King of Jorvik, a norse holdout in mostly Christian controlled anglo-saxon England, Tinfoilhate, who is playing the brother of Lancer, a lord of what is today Scotland and aiding him in his conquest of Albion, Falcon, a complete noob who didn't play the original and mostly asks basic questions while procrastinating to marry his character off and Nou, who joins late as a Christian earl under Lancer, and who tries to assassinate the poor bastard. While we are all independent realms, we are all of the norse culture and all worship the one-armed god. Besides Nou, who worships some guy whose claim to fame is walking on water.

We begin with Lancer and Tinfoilhate's conquest of England for the Old Gods as we all learn the game slowly and deliberately. The highlight is figuring out the new viking mechanics, which allow you to land raiders to pillage Christian holdings along rivers and then literally load your ships with ducats of the pope's gold. Splendid.

You also get to see our characters, who were all custom designed and had no ancestry to speak of, build the first generation of their family as their sons come of age and take over in their decrepitude.
