Let's Play Doom 2 - Part 11 END
I am playing Doom 2 via the GZDoom source port... With a controller (Xtreme!)! You can buy the game here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/2300/DOOM_II/
Needless to say Doom 2 is my favourite game of all time. It takes everything that made the original Doom game so amazing and turned every single possible dial well over the limit and it's excellent. Fast, furious combat, awesome and well designed enemies, memorable maps and the undeniable classic guns we know and love along with the super shotgun joining the fray. It just does almost everything right and is the kind of FPS I want to see more of in this day and age.
Sure I said it's ALMOST perfect, there are some things that hamper it though. Poor placement of chaingunners, pain elementals and arch-viles coupled together with rare level naff ups can make it quite frustrating. The occasional level that makes the player wander a ton can get a little annoying but I mostly chalk that up to my terrible memory but the one thing that's objectively bad about Doom 2 is the final boss: The Icon of Sin. While the intentions were good, the design was horrible and just ended up being poorly conceived - needlessly frustrating without mouse look and a total joke with it while it spawns random monster after random monsters for artificial difficulty. I'm really not a fan of the boss monsters in classic Doom but The Icon of Sin is most certainly the worst by far because of how horribly balanced it is - it's just a bad boss no matter how you look at it even for 1994.
Doom 2 certainly has more flaws than Doom 1 but the reason why I love it so much more is because I feel while Doom 1 is consistently fun all the way through (except for Thy Flesh Consumed for me), Doom 2 is SO much more fun in my opinion and the new enemies, super shotgun and ambitious level design really puts it above the first game for me - hell Doom without the super shotty, revenants, mancubi and what-not feels like an almost naked experience to me now; it's very weird. Very high highs with very rare lows. Nothing is perfect but with more polish and a better final boss then I would definitely call it a perfect game. However the mod support makes it the perfect game for me!
Stay tuned for more Doom this November, next up is the Fragging Free mod for Doom 3 and I plan to do at least one megawad before December - maybe even two who knows!
After the genocide of Phobos and the disappearance of Deimos, the nightmare has finally found its way to our own home planet. Our cities on fire, our population dead or possessed and the impending extinction of the human race swiftly taking its course - it's take to take our trusty shotgun once again and let them know they made it personal. It's time for Hell on Earth!
