Let's talk about punching for a moment. Unarmed or Barehanded attacks are numerically the STRONGEST attacks in the game, assuming you have a lot of free time to grind up your fist levels to 16 and assuming you like taking all the hits ever because you will have ZERO evasion contributed from your weapons.

Fists are in my opinion the worst weapons to level in the newer versions of FF2, BUT if you have your little punch happy little heart set on using them you probably want to equip the heaviest armor you can on your punchlord to mitigate all the attacks they are going to be stopping with their face.

As powerful as punching is for the first 90% of the game, it really falls off in the last 10%. That is because to get the full attack power of fists you have to go out of your way to GRIND GRIND and GRIND some more. On the other hand to get the full attack power of the other weapons all you have to do is equip them.
